Know types of content to post on each platforms

Knowing that you need to post on social media is the first step in growing your online audience.

Of course, then doing it has to happen, right?

But what about the type of content to post?

How do the different platforms differ?

Should you be posting on more than one platform anyway?

The different types of content

On social media, there are a few different types of content that you can post.

The main 4 are:

1- Videos
2- Images
3- Text
4- Audio

There are different variations to all these and we’ll get into some of them later on but there’s lots of other post types you can do too.

Such as:

  • e-books or PDF files
  • Slides or presentations (power points)
  • Actual documents (word, excel or other types)
  • Text with image background
  • meme (image with quotes or fun text)
  • GIFs (moving images)
  • URL (link to web page or other social post)
  • and many more types

The main platforms

There are lots of social media platforms out there.

Not to say you need to be posting on all of them and you can even start with one like I did, but eventually you should be posting on the main platforms.

They are:

  • Facebook
  • YouTube
  • Instagram
  • LinkedIn
  • Twitter
  • Pinterest
  • TikTok

Other than that, you might consider the story platforms.

  • Snapchat
  • Instagram stories
  • Facebook stories
  • LinkedIn stories
  • Twitter fleets
  • YouTube stories (only with 1000+ subscribers)

Personally, I post daily to all these platforms and many more using automation.

The differences in the post types on the platforms

So, let’s talk about the types of posts you can do on the main platforms and their differences.

Videos:

  • Facebook: long (4+ hours)
  • YouTube: long (4+ hours)
  • Instagram: 60 seconds in feed, 60 minutes in IGTV
  • LinkedIn: 10 minutes max
  • Pinterest: 15 minutes max
  • Twitter: 2 minutes 20 seconds max

Images:

  • Facebook: Yes
  • YouTube: No (only video thumbnails)
  • Instagram: Yes – prefer square
  • LinkedIn: Yes
  • Twitter: Yes
  • Pinterest: Yes

Text limits:

  • Facebook: No limit (over 60,000 characters)
  • YouTube: 5,000 characters
  • Instagram: 2,200 characters
  • LinkedIn: 700 characters
  • Twitter: 280 characters
  • Pinterest: 500 characters

As you can see there are slight differences in each platform.

Differences in story platforms

Snapchat videos are 10 seconds long but a full story can be 60 seconds maximum which will post 6 separate 10 second videos but you can save the full 60 second recording before posting it.

Intagram stories are up to 15 seconds and you can record up to 60 seconds as well, however you can only save them as 4 15 second videos.

Facebook stories (as well as Messenger stories) are 20 second maximum.

LinkedIn stories are also 20 seconds max

YouTube stories are 15 seconds

Finally, Twitter Fleets are 30 seconds.

How to use this to create posts?

One thing you could do is learn all this and create posts for all these platforms based on the requirements and differences.

That’s what I did for years.

It also meant I didn’t post very different things and usually either shared content from one platform to the other (which I still do in some cases) or that I just didn’t post to many platforms.

I mean, it’s all about consistency right?

I decided to create my own tool so I could post everywhere without having to worry about these differences.

I also create content that brings people to my blog.

That’s attraction marketing!

Conclusion

Maybe you’re worried that some people will be annoyed at you for not posting the entire video on LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook.

I get that – it’s no fun when some people say bad things about us.

However, those people are not your audience or your fans, so it’s best to learn to not worry about them.

After all, you want your fans to see your stuff – and they love you!
